Our Approach to Photographing Bar/Bat Mitzvahs

Our children's bar/bat mitzvahs. I've been photographing weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs since 1980. Can you imagine a boy of bar mitzvah age photographing his peers? Yes, I was the kid with the camera. I have honed my skills over the past 27 years, and even photographed many weddings of previous bar and bat mitzvah clients. Creating beautiful photographs of families, photographs, that recall memories for generations to come, this is my passion and career.

Tradition! Along with shooting traditional, classic bar and bat mitzvah photos - the kind that still make your parents kiss you with pride, I am constantly learning the newest techniques. These traditional photos are punctuated with meaningful photojournalistic candids. Narens Photography is modern yet traditionalist. Our photos will make you kiss your children 25 years later, too.

How many photographers do you need? Depending on the size of the event you might want one or two photographers. Typically, one photographer should be able to handle the party. When you've got a general sense about the type of event and how many people you host, we can help you determine photography staffing. My carefully selected staff shooters and assistants are professionals, too, and we're a seamless team for your family.

Temple Photos. Your temple/synagogue portraits are usually taken during the week of the ceremony. Oftentimes, the temple will tell us when this "portrait session" may be scheduled. Normally, we'll shoot in your sanctuary, but if this is not possible or desirable, or you prefer a backdrop, we'll gladly provide a backdrop at no additional charge and we're always able to find a location to set that up. Weather permitting, we will go outside for photos as well. You're welcome to bring grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins - anyone you'd like to have there, but we need you to let us know in advance so that we can plan accordingly. If you'd prefer, or it is more suitable to have family photographs prior to the reception, please let us know in advance, and we'll do our best to accommodate your request. The temple session typically lasts between 45 minutes and an hour.

The party. Once the party starts, we primarily concentrate on candid shots, and we have a list of traditional images you might like such as tables, groups, candle lighting, blessings, toasts, special dances, and others. For your child's sake and for the momentum of the party, we prefer not bother them by pulling them away from friends for various portraits throughout the party. If you have a list of special people and special shots you'd like, please present this to us in advance of the party so that we are sure to cover them.

Memories. We know that you, the grandparents and your friends are very proud of your son or daughter. This bar/bat mitzvah is their day. We know that you will be busy making many decisions for your child. Remember to help make this the best day possible and most importantly, allow them to enjoy the event. When they're happy, you're happy. When the family is happy, the memories and the photographs are always better.
